HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law; and

WHEREAS, Sargent Shriver inspired those around him to believe that everyone deserves the right to equal access to justice and opportunity; today, the Shriver Center is one of the nation's leading advocates for the poor, giving a voice to people living in poverty; and

WHEREAS, The Shriver Center works to ensure that laws and policies provide low-income people with access to adequate health care, decent housing, a safety net, and opportunities to achieve their full potential; and

WHEREAS, The Shriver Center advocates across a range of issues important to people living in poverty, including asset building, budget and tax issues, criminal justice, early childhood, education, healthcare, housing, and issues affecting women and girls; it provides free legal representation and represents clients in state and federal court and before administrative agencies, both in class actions and in individual cases; and

WHEREAS, The Shriver Center is a national network of lawyers, community organizers, activists, researchers, litigators, and philanthropists from every state; and

WHEREAS, Sargent Shriver famously and frequently posed two questions: "What have you done today to make this a better world? What will you do tomorrow?"; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the 50th anniversary the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law, and we wish them many more years of success; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Shriver Center as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
