HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Fred 
4August Kummerow of Urbana, who passed away on May 31, 2017; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow became a resident of Urbana in order 
6to pursue the position of Assistant Professor of Food Chemistry 
7at the University of Illinois after successfully completing his 
8bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees at the University of 
9Wisconsin-Madison; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow served as a Ph.D. thesis advisor for 
11over 60 graduate students; he  authored or coauthored over 400 
12peer-reviewed papers during his time at the university; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow's determination, even in the face of 
14skepticism and other challenges, to pursue knowledge of the 
15relationship of lipids to nutrition and heart disease resulted 
16in revolutionary findings; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow's research changed the way people 
18think about their diet across the globe and forced federal 
19agencies to acknowledge the dangers of trans fats; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, Fred Kummerow not only manifested scientific

1curiosity and the betterment of humanity through science 
2throughout his life but also continually advocated for the 
3difficulties faced by economically disadvantaged scholars; 
4therefore, be it
  
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
6HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, 
7along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Fred 
8Kummerow; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
10presented to the family of Fred Kummerow as an expression of 
11our deepest sympathy.
