| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to
recognize the Sugar Grove Corn Boil on |
| 4 | | the occasion of its 50th anniversary and on its tradition of |
| 5 | | fostering a community
spirit and supporting charitable causes; |
| 6 | | and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, The first Corn Boil was organized in 1967 by the
|
| 8 | | Young Adults Club for the purpose of raising funds to erect a
|
| 9 | | new street lamp for the local community; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The original Corn Boil used corn grown in, and
|
| 11 | | around, the local community; it was then cooked using a vintage
|
| 12 | | steam engine to boil large tubs of water; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, The Corn Boil began to grow quickly, and over the
|
| 14 | | following years, it became more and more popular; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Seeing this growth, the Young Adults Club was
|
| 16 | | reorganized, becoming the Sugar Grove Community Group in order
|
| 17 | | to retain senior members while attracting new members for the
|
| 18 | | purpose of continuing fundraising projects, including the Corn
|
| 19 | | Boil; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, In 1985, volunteers from around the community
|

| 1 | | built a pavilion for the Corn Boil using donated materials; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, In 2000 and 2004, the Corn Boil was extended,
|
| 3 | | first to a two-day event, and subsequently, to a three-day |
| 4 | | event
to keep up with its popularity and growth; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Sugar Grove Corn Boil has grown into a
|
| 6 | | four-day event that is attended by up to 35,000 people a year
|
| 7 | | with dozens of attractions, including live music, carnival
|
| 8 | | rides, local vendors, fireworks show, car show, 5K run, beer |
| 9 | | garden, carnival, parade, bingo, and many others exciting |
| 10 | | events; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The 2017 Sugar Grove Corn Boil seeks to raise
|
| 12 | | awareness of Autism and will be dedicated to Giant Steps' |
| 13 | | Canopy
Adult Services Program (CASP), a program dedicated to |
| 14 | | providing
day programs to adult individuals on the autism |
| 15 | | spectrum; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The Sugar Grove Corn Boil, after 50 years of
|
| 17 | | operation, still continues in the tradition of community
|
| 18 | | fundraising and charity to worthy and noble causes that its
|
| 19 | | founders began; therefore, be it
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 21 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
|
