| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 125th anniversary of the |
| 4 | | founding of Glen Carbon; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Glen Carbon, which means "Valley of Coal", was |
| 6 | | incorporated in 1892; it was an area already rich in |
| 7 | | agriculture, mining, and railroading and served as a hub of |
| 8 | | travel for people and goods; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Glen Carbon had many industries throughout the |
| 10 | | years; bricks manufactured by the St. Louis Brick Company |
| 11 | | located in the Village, were used in buildings in Forest Park |
| 12 | | for the 1904 World's Fair; in 1898, the first volunteer fire |
| 13 | | department was created; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Glen Carbon became a melting pot of nationalities |
| 15 | | and a community where people watched out and cared for each |
| 16 | | other; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, The history of Glen Carbon can be found in the |
| 18 | | Glen Carbon Heritage Museum, housed in a building built in 1914 |
| 19 | | and originally used as the local school; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, Glen Carbon is known by some as a "quiet |
