HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Every year an estimated 50,000-65,000 undocumented students graduate from United States high schools, yet only an estimated five to 10% of these students are able to attend college due to a lack of access to financial aid; and

WHEREAS, The DePaul University Undocumented Vincentian Allies worked with the Student Government Association to address this issue, proposing a referendum to the student body which, if passed, would increase tuition by $2 quarterly for full-time undergraduate students to be put into a scholarship fund for undocumented students; and

WHEREAS, DePaul University's student body overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposed referendum, creating a scholarship fund of approximately $79,000; and

WHEREAS, DePaul University's president, Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider C.M., upheld and supported this student-led initiative; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate and commend the students who led this initiative who embody the legacy of St. Vincent de Paul, which calls for a commitment to service and the experience of the poor and a pledge to build transformative relationships amongst marginalized communities and those working towards justice for such communities; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to DePaul University's President of Undocumented Vincentian Allies, the President of the Student Government Association, and University President Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider C.M.
