| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 150th anniversary of the |
| 4 | | incorporation of the Village of Orangeville; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, On January 1, 1838, John Curtis purchased
80 acres |
| 6 | | from the United States government at the Dixon Land Office; he |
| 7 | | built a primitive
dam on the Richland Creek and constructed a |
| 8 | | gristmill and sawmill on the west side of the creek; in 1846, |
| 9 | | John Bower arrived with his family and purchased the 80 acres |
| 10 | | and the
mills; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1851, John Bower had the Stephenson County |
| 12 | | Surveyor plan a new village on the east side of Richland Creek; |
| 13 | | Orangeville continued to grow and was incorporated in 1867; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Although the origin of the name Orangeville is |
| 15 | | unknown, there are three possibilities - it was named in honor |
| 16 | | of Orangeville, Pennsylvania to draw settlers from that area; |
| 17 | | it was named after the Hedge or Mock Orange that grew in the |
| 18 | | area; or it was named after a prairie plant with an orange |
| 19 | | flower that also grew in the area; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, Orangeville is a community of |
| 21 | | approximately 800 people; it maintains its own school system, |
