| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, In 1917, Chicago business leader Melvin Jones | ||||||
| 3 | encouraged members of various
business organizations to reach | ||||||
| 4 | beyond business and strive for the betterment of their
| ||||||
| 5 | communities and the world; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, On June 7, 1917, an organizational meeting was | ||||||
| 7 | held in Chicago and the group took
the name "Association of | ||||||
| 8 | Lions Clubs" and embarked on what would be a purpose to promote
| ||||||
| 9 | good government and citizenship, civic and community | ||||||
| 10 | involvement, create a forum for public
interest, and encourage | ||||||
| 11 | community service; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, In 1920, Lions Clubs chartered a club in Windsor, | ||||||
| 13 | Canada, thus becoming an
international service organization; | ||||||
| 14 | and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, In 1925, Helen Keller charged the Lions with being | ||||||
| 16 | "knights of the blind" and began
one of the Lions most active | ||||||
| 17 | service roles, to aid the visually impaired; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, In 1939, Lion Carl Edwin Stotz called on support | ||||||
| 19 | from Lions to organize a baseball
program for children, thus | ||||||
| 20 | creating Little League Baseball; and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, In 1968, the Lions Clubs International Foundation | ||||||
| 2 | was established and has since
given more than $826 million in | ||||||
| 3 | grants to support humanitarian work; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Staying true to their motto "We Serve", Lions | ||||||
| 5 | Clubs throughout the world have played
integral roles in aiding | ||||||
| 6 | flood, earthquake, and tsunami victims, fighting the spread of | ||||||
| 7 | blindness and
measles, and immunizing children at risk of | ||||||
| 8 | disease; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Lions Clubs International will celebrate its | ||||||
| 10 | 100th anniversary and its first
century of service at its | ||||||
| 11 | Chicago Centennial Celebration from June 30 to July 4, 2017, | ||||||
| 12 | which
will feature the plenary session of Lions on Sunday, July | ||||||
| 13 | 2; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 15 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 16 | recognize July 2, 2017 as
Lions Day in Illinois to give | ||||||
| 17 | recognition to Lions across Illinois, and the world, for their
| ||||||
| 18 | commitment to serving the peoples of the world; and be it | ||||||
| 19 | further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the president and the board
of directors of Lions | ||||||
| 22 | Clubs International.
