HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives are pleased to recognize the 180th anniversary 
4of the invention of the John Deere steel plow; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1837, John Deere invented the steel plow in 
6Grand Detour as a way to
improve the efficiency of plowing the 
7sticky prairie soil; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, The Smithsonian Institution has recognized the 
9John Deere steel plow as one of the 101
Objects That Made 
10America; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Over the last 180 years, John Deere has grown from 
12a one-man steel plow
manufacturer to a worldwide corporation, 
13producing a wide variety of farm and home
equipment; and
 
14    WHEREAS, With over 70,000 farms covering nearly 27 million 
15acres, about 75% of the total land area in Illinois, 
16agriculture is the number one business in the State; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, Illinois ranks sixth in the nation for 
18agricultural production; and
  
 
19    WHEREAS, The world headquarters of Deere & Company is

1located in Moline; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, Deere & Company employs thousands of people in its 
3four factories and 11
office buildings all located in Illinois; 
4therefore, be it
  
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
6HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
7recognize Deere &
Company on the 180th anniversary of the 
8invention of the John Deere steel plow and for its

9contributions to Illinois agriculture since; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That we wish Deere & Company many more successful 
11years; and be it further
  
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
13presented to Deere & Company as a
symbol of our esteem and 
14respect.
