HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to recognize Josephine Wade   on the 
4contributions that she has made to the betterment of her 
5community; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, At the age of 15, Josephine Wade made the decision 
7to overcome poverty; she entered the
business world at the age 
8of 21; for 33 years,
she  has been a restaurateur and mortgage 
9broker; in 1989, she
and her husband, Rupert Smith, opened 
10Captain's Hard Times Dining on East 79th Street; in less than 
11four months, the restaurant quickly outgrew the
building and 
12was moved to its present location; and
  
 
  
13    WHEREAS, Josephine Wade is a member of Carter Temple CME 
14Church; she is on the Board of Directors of the Albertina 
15Walker Scholarship Foundation and is a member of the Community 
16Advisory Board of Carver High School and the Advisory Board of 
17Harold Washington College's Hospitality Program; she is a 
18member of the National Association for the Advancement of 
19Colored People, the Rainbow/Push Coalition, the Urban League, 
20the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., the American 
21Religious Connection of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, 
22the National Prison Ministry, Women Empowered, and many others;

1    WHEREAS, The intersection of East  79th Street  and South  
2Vernon Avenue in Chicago will be named in her honor on March 4, 
32017; therefore, be it
  
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
5HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
6recognize Josephine Wade   on the contributions that she has made 
7to the betterment of her community and we wish her many more 
8successful years; and be it further
  
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
10presented to Josephine Wade as an expression of our esteem and 
11respect.
