| 2 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) was born into slavery; |
| 3 | | and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North and |
| 5 | | subsequently made approximately 13 missions to rescue |
| 6 | | approximately 70 enslaved people, family and friends, using the |
| 7 | | network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the |
| 8 | | Underground Railroad; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Harriet Tubman later helped abolitionist John |
| 10 | | Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry; during the |
| 11 | | Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the United |
| 12 | | States Army; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, In her later years, Harriet Tubman was an activist |
| 14 | | in the struggle for women's suffrage; therefore, be it
|
| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 16 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE |
| 17 | | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of North |
| 18 | | Avenue in Chicago from its intersection with Central Avenue to |
| 19 | | its intersection with Cicero Avenue as the "Harriet Tubman |
| 20 | | Memorial Avenue"; and be it further |
