| 2 | | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General |
| 3 | | Assembly pays honor and respect to the truly great individuals |
| 4 | | who have served our country, and in doing so, have gone above |
| 5 | | and beyond the call of duty to make the ultimate sacrifice for |
| 6 | | our nation; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Don H. Lascelles was born and raised in Mason |
| 8 | | County; he was a member of the American Legion Boys; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Lascelles graduated with honors from Balyki |
| 10 | | Community High School in
1965; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Lascelles volunteered for the United States |
| 12 | | Army and served
honorably in Vietnam; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Lascelles was cited for valor in assuming |
| 14 | | command of his platoon in action
against the enemy after his |
| 15 | | platoon leaders fell in battle, one seriously wounded and the |
| 16 | | other killed; as
a result, he was awarded the Bronze Star with |
| 17 | | V device; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, In further action on June 6, 1969, Sgt. Lascelles |
| 19 | | performed in a similar manner,
protecting his men when he was |
| 20 | | mortally wounded; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Lascelles was posthumously awarded a second |
| 2 | | Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster; and
|
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Lascelles is honored on the Vietnam War |
| 4 | | Memorial on the courthouse
square in the City of Havana, the |
| 5 | | Vietnam Memorial in Springfield, and the National Vietnam
|
| 6 | | Memorial in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it
|
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 8 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE |
| 9 | | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section
of Illinois |
| 10 | | Route 78 in Mason County from the Illinois River in the City of |
| 11 | | Havana to the Sangamon River
in the township of Lynchburg as |
| 12 | | the "Sgt. Don H. Lascelles Memorial Highway"; and be it further
|
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation |
| 14 | | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
|
| 15 | | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs |
| 16 | | giving notice of the name "Sgt. Don H.
Lascelles Memorial |
| 17 | | Highway"; and be it further
|
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
|
| 19 | | presented to the family of Sgt. Lascelles and the Secretary of |
| 20 | | the Department of Transportation.
