AN ACT concerning State government. |
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |
represented in the General Assembly: |
Section 5. The State Fire Marshal Act is amended by |
changing Section 5 as follows: |

Sec. 5. Tracking firefighter mortality. Beginning no later |
than 6 months after January 1, 2026 (the effective date of |
Public Act 104-102) this amendatory Act of the 104th General |
Assembly, all fire departments and units of local government |
that provide fire protection services in this State shall |
report the death of any firefighter employed by the fire |
department or unit of local government to the Office of the |
State Fire Marshal. The information reported to the Office |
shall include the cause and manner of death, including, but |
not limited to, any deaths resulting from suicide and the |
various types of cancer. If a firefighter separates from a |
fire department or unit of local government with a known |
cancer diagnosis and succumbs to that cancer within 12 months |
after separation, the fire department or unit of local |
government shall report the death to the Office. The the |

Office of the State Fire Marshal shall receive, track, and |
record all reported firefighter deaths, including the cause |
and the manner of death, as reported under this Section for all |
firefighters in Illinois, including suicide and the various |
types of cancer. The Office shall publish an annual report |
concerning the information reported under this Section and |
shall make the report available to the public no later than 90 |
days after the end of each calendar year. |

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
becoming law. |
