| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Cheryl F. Green, Ph.D. on | ||||||
| 4 | the occasion of her retirement as president of Governors State | ||||||
| 5 | University; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green, who originally hails from Chicago, | ||||||
| 7 | earned her master's degree and her Ph.D. in Counseling | ||||||
| 8 | Psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and | ||||||
| 9 | she received her bachelor's degree in psychology from | ||||||
| 10 | Manchester College, now Manchester University, in North | ||||||
| 11 | Manchester, Indiana; she also obtained several National | ||||||
| 12 | Incident Management System certificates from the U.S. Federal | ||||||
| 13 | Emergency Management Institute, and she serves as a recognized | ||||||
| 14 | leader in grievance mediation and conflict resolution; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green has served as the sixth president of | ||||||
| 16 | Governors State University in Chicago's Southland, University | ||||||
| 17 | Park since taking the helm on July 1, 2020; during her tenure, | ||||||
| 18 | she built a lasting legacy of academic excellence coupled with | ||||||
| 19 | successful accreditation while supporting the mission of | ||||||
| 20 | Governors State University, serving as a visionary and | ||||||
| 21 | inspiring leader who has been deeply committed to advancing | ||||||
| 22 | programs, initiatives, and scholarship across the Southland | ||||||
| 23 | and the State of Illinois, advocating for equity in funding | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | and supporting social mobility; she was instrumental in | ||||||
| 2 | fostering a campus-wide culture of inclusion and belonging, | ||||||
| 3 | dedicating significant efforts to the establishment of a | ||||||
| 4 | number of initiatives, including the Honors College, the | ||||||
| 5 | College of Graduate Studies, the Latinx Center, and the Social | ||||||
| 6 | Justice Initiative Building, while also supporting a wide | ||||||
| 7 | range of educational and community outreach activities; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green has led a distinguished career in | ||||||
| 9 | higher education for more than 36 years, previously serving as | ||||||
| 10 | vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of | ||||||
| 11 | Wisconsin Oshkosh, interim chancellor for the University of | ||||||
| 12 | Wisconsin Whitewater, and assistant vice president for student | ||||||
| 13 | affairs at Tennessee State University (TSU); before her time | ||||||
| 14 | at TSU, she served Chicago State University in a variety of | ||||||
| 15 | administrative and academic roles, including as director/chair | ||||||
| 16 | of the counseling department, inaugural dean of first-year | ||||||
| 17 | students, acting associate director of career placement, and | ||||||
| 18 | as a tenured associate professor of counseling; she also | ||||||
| 19 | served as the statewide representative for 2,700 faculty and | ||||||
| 20 | staff for seven public universities in her role as grievance | ||||||
| 21 | officer for the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) | ||||||
| 22 | Local 4100; and | ||||||
| 23 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green has remained committed to making a | ||||||
| 24 | difference through her service to the community, which spans | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | the United States and has included serving on several | ||||||
| 2 | different advisory boards or boards of directors, including | ||||||
| 3 | the Manchester University Board of Trustees, the Association | ||||||
| 4 | of Governing Boards (ABG) Council of Presidents, the inaugural | ||||||
| 5 | Presidential Ambassadors Council of the Association of | ||||||
| 6 | International Education Administrators (AIEA), the Will County | ||||||
| 7 | Center for Economic Development Board of Directors, the | ||||||
| 8 | Southland Development Authority Board of Directors, the Howard | ||||||
| 9 | Hughes Medical Institute STEM Grant Advisory Board of UW | ||||||
| 10 | Madison, the Forward 50 Advisory Board for the National | ||||||
| 11 | Association of Student and Financial Aid Administrators, and | ||||||
| 12 | the Milwaukee-based Gift of Adoption Wisconsin Board of | ||||||
| 13 | Directors; she is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, | ||||||
| 14 | Inc. and the Will County Black Diamond Chapter of the Top | ||||||
| 15 | Ladies of Distinction, Inc., and she is a Silver Life member of | ||||||
| 16 | the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People | ||||||
| 17 | (NAACP); and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green has received a number of accolades, | ||||||
| 19 | including being named to Crain Chicago Business's 2021 Notable | ||||||
| 20 | Black Leaders and Executives list, a Woman of First | ||||||
| 21 | Distinction by the Illinois Black Hall of Fame, one of the 2022 | ||||||
| 22 | Top 50 Women Leaders of Illinois by Women We Admire, an | ||||||
| 23 | honorary grand marshal of the 2022 Bud Billiken Parade, and a | ||||||
| 24 | 2023 Business Leader of Color by Chicago United; she also | ||||||
| 25 | received the 2022 Excellence in Education Award by the Central | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a | ||||||
| 2 | feature in a Newsweek profile that discussed the Governors | ||||||
| 3 | State University's 2022 ranking in U.S. News & World Report | ||||||
| 4 | for being one of the top 25 best Midwest schools for social | ||||||
| 5 | mobility, and the 2023 Outstanding Commitment in Education | ||||||
| 6 | Award by the Illinois State Treasurer; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green is widely respected and admired by | ||||||
| 8 | Governors State University students, faculty, staff, | ||||||
| 9 | administration, the board of trustees, professional | ||||||
| 10 | colleagues, and the broader academic community for her | ||||||
| 11 | exceptional leadership, steadfast dedication, and significant | ||||||
| 12 | contributions to higher education throughout her tenure as | ||||||
| 13 | president; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green will retire at the end of February | ||||||
| 15 | 2025; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 17 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 18 | we congratulate Cheryl F. Green, Ph.D. on the occasion of her | ||||||
| 19 | retirement, recognize her extraordinary contributions to | ||||||
| 20 | Governors State University and the State of Illinois, and | ||||||
| 21 | thank her for exceptional guidance, unwavering dedication, and | ||||||
| 22 | servant leadership; and be it further | ||||||
