SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, March 20th has been designated as International Francophonie Day to celebrate the diversity, richness, and contributions of the French-speaking world; and

WHEREAS, Illinois is home to a vibrant and growing population of French-speaking residents who contribute to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of our state; and

WHEREAS, French is one of the official languages of Illinois and has deep historical ties through both our educational institutions and global diplomatic and business relations; and

WHEREAS, The global Francophonie community includes over 300 million people across five continents who are united by a shared commitment to cultural diversity, human rights, and the promotion of peace; and

WHEREAS, The French language and culture have shaped Illinois through literature, art, cuisine, architecture, and historical connections that continue to enrich our communities; and

WHEREAS, It is important to foster an inclusive environment where French-speaking individuals feel supported, valued, and empowered in their personal, professional, and educational pursuits and for Illinois employers to consider hiring French-speaking individuals and provide support to help them integrate effectively into the workforce; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March 20, 2025 as Francophonie Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we encourage all Illinois citizens to observe this day by reflecting on the contributions of the Francophonie community and by continuing to support initiatives that promote the French language and culture.
