| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive, | ||||||
| 3 | neurological disease and is the second most common | ||||||
| 4 | neurodegenerative disease in the United States; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is estimated to affect | ||||||
| 6 | approximately one million people in the United States, and the | ||||||
| 7 | prevalence will rise to 1.2 million by 2030; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Each year, 90,000 people in the United States are | ||||||
| 9 | newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of | ||||||
| 11 | death in the United States according to the Centers for | ||||||
| 12 | Disease Control and Prevention; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, The economic burden of Parkinson's disease is | ||||||
| 14 | estimated to be at least $52 billion annually, including | ||||||
| 15 | direct and indirect costs, which include treatment, social | ||||||
| 16 | security payments, and lost income to patients and family | ||||||
| 17 | members; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Research suggests the cause of Parkinson's | ||||||
| 19 | disease is a combination of genetic and environmental factors, | ||||||
| 20 | but the exact cause and progression of the disease is still | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | unknown; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, There is no objective test or biomarker for | ||||||
| 3 | Parkinson's disease, and there is no cure or drug to slow or | ||||||
| 4 | halt the progression of the disease; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, The symptoms of Parkinson's disease vary from | ||||||
| 6 | person to person and can include tremors, slowness of movement | ||||||
| 7 | and rigidity, difficulty with balance, swallowing, chewing, | ||||||
| 8 | and speaking, cognitive impairment and dementia, mood | ||||||
| 9 | disorders, and a variety of other non-motor symptoms; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical | ||||||
| 11 | professionals are working to improve the quality of life of | ||||||
| 12 | persons living with Parkinson's disease and their families; | ||||||
| 13 | and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Increased research, education, and community | ||||||
| 15 | support services, such as those provided by the Parkinson's | ||||||
| 16 | Foundation and other organizations, are needed to find more | ||||||
| 17 | effective treatments and to provide access to quality care to | ||||||
| 18 | those living with the disease today; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 20 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 21 | we declare April of 2025 as Parkinson's Awareness Month in the | ||||||
